Funeral Service & Memorial

The funeral turned out very well on Saturday.  Many friends and family members came to honor dad Heiss.

The memorial in front included blue (favorite color) flowers on the left that said Grandpa, red roses in the center that said Beloved Father and a nice planter with flowers on the right from his Flint friends (they did lunch one a week).  The picture on the right is from Susan's wedding and his urn was a large clay pot.  This summer we will be doing a burial at Bear Lake.

The day started with a slide show of about 75 pictures of dad and we played some of his favorite classical music.

Below is a picture of Jim, Emily and I right before the memorial service started.
After the memorial service, we had a huge meal that the members of Peace Lutheran church helped with.  Uncle David (Bob's brother) is on the left and Uncle Marvin (my side of the family) is on the right.
Here is Jim with cousin Matt.
Here is cousin Seth (left), Pete and Aunt Sandy and Uncle Brad (right), who is next to cousin Johnnie & his wife.
Here is Uncle David, cousin Amy, Susan (Jim's sister) and cousin Marty.
Here is my twin sister Linda with son Josh, Jim and our friend Erik.
The kids had a good time playing together, Tristan (Sue's son), Claire (my cousin's daughter), and Emily.  Looks like Emily is the ring leader?

The day turned out really well and we felt so blessed and loved by many family and friends that came to show their respect to dad.  Thank you!

More Stories from the Obituary Guest Book

January 21, 2010
Virtually the same age, Bob and I grew up together. Many fond memories include visiting in Flint when we were 4 or 5 years old (I got the mumps while there--probably infected everyone else), Thanksgiving dinners on Lincoln Drive, numerous Christmases at our home in Traverse City, summer times shared at Grandma's in Bear Lake(one year picking cherries as a group under John's "supervision") or at our cottage on Duck Lake (the boys sleeping in a tent), Bob mading a transister radio for me c. 1959, and many others.
Though unable to attend Saturday's gathering, I look forward to being in Bear Lake, a place of so many memories, where both our parents and grandparents rest.
Warmest thoughts,
Cousin Jim

I remember how our family always stopped in Flint and visited at Thanksgiving time. I was the youngest of the cousins so a bit out of the loop, but Bob always took time for me -- great memories! We will be at the graveside in Bear Lake. Wish we could have spent more time together in recent years. I pray God will comfort all of you during this time of loss.

With love,

I always looked forward to our old farts lunchen every thursday. He will be missed. He always had a comment on what we were discussing and was usually right. May God bless him

My cousin Bob was a brilliant man, with a sharp wit. I haven't seen him in some years, but have fond memories of holidays with the Heisses and visits to grandmother's in Bear Lake where we hiked in got ice cream cones downtown, swam at the public beach.the woods, great fun. I remember when I was at MSU arranging a blind date for Bob. Since then we saw each other only at funerals, anniversaries weddings....something I sorely regret now. I regret I am unable to attend his funeral this Saturday, but plan to attend the graveside service in warmer weather.

To the Heiss Family,
I've had the pleasure of getting to know Bob for the past 2 years during our conversations about investments. He was always interesting to listen to and very smart about alot of things!
My
condolences.

When I took drivers trainning, Bob was my "car mate". He knew so much more about cars than I did. I wondered if I would ever know as much about cars as he did. I'm sorry I could not attend. He is in my prayers.

A particularly fond memory is of a magnificent fall day a few years ago when a group of us flew in Bob's plane for stops on Mackinac Island and Beaver Island. I always admired his considerable knowledge of so many varied subjects and I feel extremely fortunate for having had such a good and decent man as a friend.

Thank you

Thank you to everyone who came to the funeral yesterday, it turned out very well.  Also, thank you for the many people who provided support, prayers and love from a distance.

Yesterday the video clips we had did not work during the slideshow, so I wanted to share those videos on the blog.  I hope to add many of the pictures from the slideshow and a few pictures from yesterday as well.

The above video is from February 2008.

Thanks again.
Warm regards,
Beth

Dad passed away peacefully at U of M hospital on Sunday morning at 2:35 am.  The family was with him, and we are thankful that he is not suffering after his battle with cancer, heart & kidney failure.  Dad will be greatly missed, and we look forward to sharing many fond memories.  This summer we plan to invite family to join us in a special memorial burial at Bear Lake.
